The industrial analysis and competitive strategy of 3D printing industry: Industry technology adoption life cycle perspective

3D printing technology has been a hot topic for its potential to change traditional production process. 3D printing has many advantages compared with traditional manufacturing method, such as the ability to make complex shape and short working time. Although 3D printing has been developed for about 30 years, related market report or study is not so much and not easy to get. The study is comprised of two parts: the overview of 3D printing industry and the development of 3D printing technology in the industry analysis, and case study of two types of companies, 3D Systems and MakerBot. With these analyses, we wish to understand more about the situation in 3D printing industry. This study shows that mergers and acquisitions are common in 3D printing industry. Besides that, new demand comes up because some patents have expired and technology improves over time, which results that companies change their strategy by the time: 3D Systems adopts market-oriented strategy from specialized technology and MakerBot adopts low-cost operation strategy. Another finding shows that the two companies both adopt the whole product mode which proves that the strategy to across the chasm Geoffrey Moore suggested. In the end, the study concludes with industry development trend and suggestion to follow-up study.
