Optimal Design of Structures with Supplemented Viscous Dampers

In recent years, advances in the development and practical implementation of energy dissipation devices for earthquake protection of structures have been achieved. Design methods and code specifications in this regard have been devised as a consequence. This thesis proposes an optimal design method for structures implemented with supplemental viscous dampers. The most efficient arrangement of linear fluid dampers may be determined from minimizing the displacement or acceleration response index defined. The proposed optimal design method allows for consideration of placing linear fluid dampers at full or partial floors of the building. Moreover, the given design spectrum of the excitation may be taken into account in the optimization process if desired. Effectiveness of response control based on the proposed optimal design method has been verified via theoretical development and numerical simulations. It has been shown to be more efficient than those designed in accordance with NEHRP provisions.
