Failure analysis of laminated composite plate connections

The purpose of this thesis is in the design, fabrication, and analysis of laminated composite plate connections. Two types of plate connections, namely, plane connection and three-dimensional connection, were presented in this thesis. Plane connection is subjected to transverse uniform load. Three-dimensional connection is designed to bear loads acting in different directions. The stress distribution in the plate connections is determined using the finite element method and the failure of the plate connections on the basis of an appropriate failure criterion. For the plane connection, a number of laminated composite plate connections were fabricated and subject to static transverse pressure. The experimental results were used to verify the nonlinear theoretical predictions. Close agreements between the experimental and nonlinear theoretical results have been observed. For the three-dimensional connection, the filament winding technique was used to fabricate the connections. Experimental and theoretical studies of the three-dimensional connections were performed. A comparison between the experimental and theoretical results was performed to verify the accuracy of the theoretical method.
